Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father was absent from the family, and so she was taken care of by her mother, grandmother and godparents. Ford was suffering from anxiety disorder caused by words as a young child. Ford began to become fascinated by acting during her teenaged years, she joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after just one week she realized that she didn't fit in. Ford reapplied to Central School of Speech and Drama and, on her fourth attempt, she was finally admitted. A classmate of hers were Shaun Dingwall, who would be later reprise her role as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford was able to graduate in 1993, but she made her television debut in the 1992 episode Surgical Spirit. She adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate was on television in the Nineties in shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Tate would also frequently work as a theatre actor and was eventually a part of The Royal Shakespeare Company during its season between 2000 and 2001. Tate's stand-up comedy and humour, which she added to her show in 1996, soon gained the attention of her peers.
